Captain Joseph Di Vincenzo

Submitted by Jean Di Vincenzo Voss

Joseph Di Vincenzo was born on March 20, 1920 in Buffalo, NY.  He attended Elementary School 19 where he played little league as a pitcher.  In 1934, he struck out Warren Spahn, an American Major League Baseball left handed pitcher, to win the championship that year.  He then went on to attend Riverside High School where he played football.  In 1936, they went undefeated and won the Harvard Cup under Coach Bob Rich.  The next year he was a member of the All High Football team.  In 1942, Joe accepted a position in the City of Buffalo Police Department as a Substitute Patrolman. In 1945, he joined the Navy and served until 1946. When he was discharged he went back to the Police Department.  Over the years he worked his way up the ranks by appointment as Patrolman, Detective, Detective Sergeant, and Desk Lieutenant until 1959 when he was appointed Lieutenant Acting Captain of his precinct.  During this time, he also played softball and won championships in 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1954.  In 1961 he was appointed to Assistant Chief of Detectives.  Under this title he supervised Detective Bureau Personnel including Auto Bureau, Robbery Squad, Narcotics Squad, Safe Burglary, Pawn Squad, Special Frauds and Arson.  In 1969 he was promoted to Captain and had full charge of Precinct 16.  While he was Captain he had full administrative duties and supervision of police personnel during daily police routine, strikes, riots and other sudden emergencies.  From 1976 to his retirement in 1982 he remained Captain and was involved in 14 precincts. Known as “Camera Eyeâ€Â for his photographic memory and his ability to recognize faces, he served a long and decorated career with the Buffalo Police Department. In January 30, 1975, the day I was born, my father earned the Highest Medal of Honor after exchange of gunfire and the arrest of a suspect in a terrorizing incident in a local tavern. In December of 1975, he earned the same award after exchange of gunfire and arrest of a suspect in a rape incident in a local restaurant. In 1976, he earned the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association’s Courageous Conduct Award, the Romulus Club of Buffalo Merit Award and the Citizenship Award from Arch Bishop Carol High School.  He also received the Buffalo Police Mutual Aid Honorable Mention and in 1953 he was Man of the Year. In addition he served as past President of the Buffalo Police Lieutenant’s Association and the Buffalo Police Captain’s and Inspector’s Association. In 1982 he retired as a Police Captain. A member of the Riverside High School Championship Football team in 1936, he was inducted into the Harvard Cup Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also a lifetime member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. Before his death on February 1, 2010 at the age of 89, he maintained residence in Buffalo and in Florida for part of the year. In his spare time he sang, played golf which incidentally he received a trophy for a hole in one in a West Palm Beach golf tournament. He also worked as a security guard during the summer at Brighton Golf Course and Pilot Field.
